|Skopje Jazz Festival – Andy Bay Opens Jubilee Celebrations|
(Dnevnik, 20.10.2006) - The best and most significant jazz singer of present times Andy Bay will open the 25th edition of the Skopje Jazz Festival in the Universal Hall on Friday evening at 20,30h. Besides Ornette Coleman, he is probably the biggest name to perform in Skopje this year.
This year’s festival program includes musicians from Norway, Holland, Italy USA, Austria, Brazil and Cuba. There are several different styles of jazz – vocal, modern with a lot of elements of electronics, up to free-jazz.
Andy Bay will present materials from his three latest editions. His last album “American Song” has been nominated for the “Grammy” award, while critics see it as Bay’s creative peak.
Saturday is reserved for the warm sounds of the South-American continent, starting with bosa-nova musician Vinicius Cantuaria from Brazil, followed by a merger of Brazilian music of Joao Bosco and Cuban sounds of Gonzalo Rubalkaba.
Dutch saxophonist Benjamin Herman will open the third festival evening alongside his quartet, followed by the performance of Swedish pianist Esbjorn Svenson Trio, who guarantee a quality performance and an exceptional atmosphere.
The festival also includes club gigs and a midnight program. After the performance of Andy Bay, the party continues in club “Hard Rock” with Norwegian band “Wibutee”, which plays a mix of pop, jazz and electronic music. Italian saxophonist Stefano di Batista will perform on Saturday, while Austrian violinist Rudi Berger, who is seen as one of the best jazz-violinists in the world, will complete the performances in “Hard Rock”.
The festival will be closed with the third saxophonist, Ornette Coleman – the only jazz great who hasn’t performed in front of the Skopje Jazz Festival audience.
