|Festival – May Opera Evenings Open|
(Vest, 11.05.2007) - Formal opening of the 35th “May Opera Evenings” was held at the plateau of the Macedonian Opera and Ballet on Wednesday evening. Minister of Culture Arifhikmet Xhemaili opened the festival, followed by the sounds of the famous march of opera “Aida”, while opera singer Slavica Petrovska-Galic lit the festival fire, which will burn until May 31.
A cocktail party followed the formal opening, while everyone went home satisfied after premiere of opera “An Italian Girl in Algiers” by Rossini, which is a co-production of Macedonian Opera and Ballet and the Musical Theatre for Central and Eastern Europe.
The audience was really surprised by the way this buffo-opera was modernized in a subtle manner by exceptional Austrian director Uschi Horner, Italian scenographer Martina Segna and Macedonian choreographer Marija Papucevska. Moreover, the audience bestowed a huge applause for performers Sanja Anastasija, Igor Durlovski, Blagoj Nacoski, Goran Nacovski, Aleksandra Lazarevska, Vladimir Sazdovski and Olgica Milevska, accompanied by the well-prepared male choir and orchestra under the baton of Sasa Nikolovski-Gjumar. In short, a wonderful start to this year’s festival edition.
