| History of Macedonian Culture - New Course at the Traditional Seminar
for Macedonian Language, Literature and Culture
(Vecer, 12.03.2002) - Beginning this year, the 35th Seminar for Macedonian language, literature and culture, which will take place from August 5th to 23rd in Ohrid, the program will include a new course entitled History of Macedonian Culture. The course will be led by Dr. Nikos Causidis from the Philosophy Faculty.
Apart from the new course, the already existing courses remain in the Seminar. Those are history of the Macedonian language, history of the Macedonian people, dialectology of the Macedonian language, Macedonian literature, old Slavic language, ethnology of the Macedonian language (included last year for the first time) and the oldest course in folk dances. The interest and the need for all eight courses exists, but because of the limited funds, all of them cannot be organized every year, says the director of the Seminar, Dr. Maksim Karanfilovski.
In order to mark the 35th anniversary of the work of the Seminar for Macedonian language, as well as the Macedonian language lectorates abroad, according to Karanfilovski, all results from the beginning until now will be looked at. Their first big assignment is to create a lexicon of foreign Macedonists with their biographic and bibliographic information and they will also try to collect bibliographic information about everything that has been published about the Macedonian language in he world. The project manager will be Dr. Maksim Karanfilovski. The work is already taking place and the material is being collected.
About providing the funds, Karanfilovski said that they have arranged to increase the funds, through contacts with the Ministries of Culture, Education and Science and Foreign Affairs. This will mean an expansion of their activities and the realization of the activities that the Seminar could not have accomplished so far because of financial restrictions. For example, every year there are at least three or four times more interested candidates than the Seminar capacity can accept (80 candidates). Apart from the regular financing, they are also trying to work with self-financing, so they can attract all students, professors and everyone interested that can contribute to the popularization of the Macedonian language in the world. According to Karanfilovski, they don’t have to be Macedonists, it is enough for them to be Russianists, Germanists and Romanists, who will include the Macedonian language in their contrastive analysis or some of our literary authors. Indications for that already exist, as well as to set the Seminar on a legal basis and of course, the financing of those activities would be increased based on what the administration will accept as a project will realistic possibilities. That would enable to invite up to 200 visitors a year and open different courses for students, scientific and cultural workers, the opening of a winter seminar etc.
