International Theatre Festival Ends - MOT Open for Total Theatre
(Dnevnik, 8.10.2002) - The ambitious program showed that there are theatre references, and that a true total theatre is happening at the stage -
International theatre festival “Young Open Theatre” (MOT) was closed Monday with performance “Roberto Zuco” of the Croatian National Theatre from Split, directed by Ivan Popovski. The Croatian performance should have been performed at the festival opening, but as if “Roberto Zuko” was destined to be performed at the end, opening the centre of human pain and great, universal topics.
Although beginning with a lot of scepticism, the Young Open Theatre ended with an approval. The audience showed openness towards the festival changes, and the interest for all performances was great.
Instead of theatre companies and their circus aesthetics, this year’s festival included great ensembles with significant, provocative and radical theatre achievements.
The ambitious program showed that there are theatre references, and that a true total theatre is happening at the stage.
Due to complicated scenographies, the performances were played at the stage of the organiser- Youth Cultural Centre. The space was used for techno parties and the music pat of the program, prepared by Kiril Dzajkovski.
An artistic council consisted of 7 members selected the program for the first time, presided by director Aleksandar Popovski.
We saw theatre performances from France, Bulgaria, Hungary, Slovakia, Italy and Slovenia. After the first performance of the only performance that was left from last year’s selection “Quartets” of French theatre troupe of juggler Gerome Toma, the audience was thrilled by National Theatre “Ivan Vazov” from Bulgaria, which performed “King Deer”, directed by Mariusz Kurkinski. The attitude of the director was clear: he freed the stage from any illusory indications and from people that speak false thoughts.
The audience, which stayed until the end of the performance in the Macedonian National Theatre despite the one-hour delay, estimated Ukrainian performance “Hamlet, Dreams”, directed by Andrej Geoldak as a masterpiece.
The Young Open Theatre continued with the performance of Nuovo Theatre and Theatre “Garibaldi” from Italy, which performed “Blacks”, directed by Antonio Latella before the packed audience of Theatre “Centar”. Despite the language barrier, the Italian ritual theatre received ovations. The guests from the Slovenian National Theatre had its admirers also. The Skopje audience was gratifying as always, showing that it loves Young Open Theatre.
