International Student Theatre Festival Starting Today - Skomrahi with Increased Budget

(Utrinski Vesnik, 27.11.2002) - The 11th Skomrahi International Student Theatre Plays Festival is opening at the Macedonian National Theatre at 8.00 p.m. today with a collage-play composed of works by Azis Nesin, Carlo Goldoni and Goran Stefanovski. Beside Macedonian students, students of the academies of drama arts in Ljubljana, Zagreb, Belgrade, Sofia, Tirana, Thessalonica and Bucharest will take part in this year’s festival. During the five festival days, eight more theatre plays will be preformed (beside the opening one), along with film shows and workshops.
Students of Organization at the Faculty of Drama Art in Skopje will organize a workshop for the first time this year. This will also be the first time that students in Cetinje, Montenegro are taking part in the festival. As Danco Cevrevski, Dean of the Faculty of Drama said, the participation of all guests has been confirmed except that of the participants form Sarajevo who have cancelled their coming because of some problems with documents.
With the exception of the opening and closing plays of Skomrahi, which will be performed at the Centar Theatre, the rest will be organized at the Faculty of Drama Art. “Because it was not certain whether we would hold the event at all until the last moment, because we got the red light very late, most of the performances and activities will be at the faculty itself,” Corevski said. “Actually, we waited for the green light by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Austria which last gave us the guarantee to fund this year’s Skomrahi, along with the event in 2003.” Corevski formally confirmed that the next Skomrahi will be held in its old term, 27th March, the World Day of Theatre. Last year, it was held in autumn because of the crisis in Macedonia.
Beside the Austrian Foreign Ministry, this year’s Skomrahi will be realized with the support of the World University Centre and Institute Open Society – Macedonia, as well as the Macedonian Ministry of Education, Science and Culture. The budget for this year’s event is significantly increased to 50, 000 euros. “It was very easy to organize Skomrahi before because ensembles came and stayed for only two days. Now, after we have improved our concept to help us exchange experience, which means that the guests are here during the whole event, the budget has been significantly increased, Corevski said.
