A Day Ahead of Ilinden - Foundation Laying Ceremony for New Museum at Smilevo

(Dnevnik, 14.07.2003) - Foundations of a new museum dedicated to the Smilevo Congress will be laid at the village of Smilevo, Demir Hisar area on August 1. The project will be carried out by the Republic Institute for Protection of Monuments of Culture, and the initiative was launched after a house that was supposed to have housed the Smilevo Congress 100 years ago fell down three months ago. Launching Ilinden Uprising was agreed during Smilevo Congress. Inspection by a team of the Republic Institute showed that the ruined house was a new structure built on the original home. Another reason to construct a museum at Smilevo is the observance of the 100th Anniversary of Ilinden Uprising.
Jovan Ristov, director of the Republic Institute said restoration of the “Ilinden” Monument (also known as “Macedonium”) in Krusevo was near completion. The monument houses revolutionary Nikola Karev’s tomb. Conservators of the Institute are intervening on the whole monumental complex. “Macedonium” is the work of Macedonian famous sculptor Jordan Grabulovski and his spouse Iskra. Its construction started in 1972 and the monument was formally opened on Ilinden two years later. Stain glass at the “Macedonium” is the work of the famous painter Borko Lazeski, and ceramics is by Petar Mazev.
