Exhibition of Previously Unseen Works by Nikola Martinoski

Nikola Martinoski
(MIA, 08.12.2003) - After year-long preparations, the Skopje Art Gallery has completed a project to mark 100 years of Nikola Martinoski’s birth (b. in Krusevo August 18, 1903, died February 7th, 1973). The project includes an exhibition of works never exhibited so far is opening at Daut Pasin Amam today.
Parallel to the exhibition, a post stamp and book-catalogue on the founder of the modern Macedonian painting will be promoted.
Total 116 art works, the ownership of the Martinoski family, that have not been shown publicly so far, will be presented in the exhibition. Because of their extensive damage, the paintings were subject to conservation and restoration. They are made in different media - drawings, tempera, oil on canvass, oil on glass.
“The exhibition is a retrospective and follows the artist’s work since 1928 during his stint in Paris until his final years. His works from the 1920s are surprising, they have never been seen and explained so far, so this is a reason more to approach this project more comprehensively,” Vladimir Velickovski, one of the authors of the exhibition, said at a press conference yesterday. He said he was surprised by Martinoski’s early works: self-portraits and expressionist and cubist paintings.
“This is the most complex project of the Skopje Art Gallery this year to which it has paid great attention.” Zlatko Teodosievski, director of the gallery said.
Kosta Martinoski, the artist’s son said “the goal of this exhibition is to protect my father’s works which will then be left to the state.” Together with Velickovski, Martinoski is the author of the selection and concept of the exhibition.
The Daut Pasin Amam show will most likely be opened for a month and will then move to the Mala Stanica facility. The Ministry of Culture has supported the project with 300,000 denars. Funds have also been provided through sponsorship.
